DVN Hub

Connecting Pet Owners, Veterinary Surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses to facilitate treatment delivery in the home

What does the DVN Hub do?

The District Veterinary Nurse (DVN) hub simply connects pet owners and their veterinary practices with district veterinary nurses in their area to help facilitate the delivery of treatment in the convenience of their own home.  At all times the veterinary care provided is under the direction of the pet’s registered vet.

What does a District Veterinary Nurse do?

  • A DVN helps pet owners in their own homes to administer treatment care plans prescribed by their registered vet.
  • They instil confidence in the pet owner’s abilities to administer medications themselves and provide vital reassurance to pet owners.
  • They work with vets to create care plans that takes into consideration not only the needs of the patient but the needs of the pet owner as well.
  • A DVN can improve the relationship between the pet owner and the veterinary practice.
  • They facilitate pet owner concordance.  Concordance is the shared understanding between the vet and the pet owner about the overall aims of the pet’s treatment care plan.  Nurses can help pet owners understand why medications need to be taken and how to manage their pet’s conditions.
  • With the help of a DVN, hospital stays can be reduced for pets.
  • For pet owners who are unable to attend veterinary practice appointments due to personal circumstances, DVNs provide vital outreach.
  • Patient outcomes are improved with the involvement of district veterinary nurses.

How does it work?

The DVN Hub does not employ nurses nor does it profit from any work generated  on this website. The goal of the Hub is to facilitate district veterinary nursing as a priority.

  • The DVN Hub advises all nurses on this site to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), have appropriate professional indemnity insurance to cover their work, be Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked and act under the clear direction of a vet at all times.
  • The DVN Hub is not responsible for enforcing these recommendations, it is the responsibility of the individual registered district veterinary nurse to ensure this and of the pet owner to ask the district registered veterinary nurse to provide evidence.
