For Veterinary Nurses

Thank you for your interest in the DVN hub.

The DVN Hub works hard to provide support and guidance for RVNs working outside traditional practice employment. As a member of our hub, you agree to ensure that the care you provide is always delivered under the instruction of a vet.

District Veterinary Nurse Code of Conduct

As a District Veterinary Nurse, I promise to:

  1. Maintain myself in good standing as a Registered Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS.
  2. Follow at all times the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses.
  3. Practice within the bounds of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, especially Schedule 3.
  4. Maintain complete records of actions taken for clients and under the instruction of a veterinary surgeon.
  5. Practice equity and inclusion with my clients, especially with regard to the provisions of the Equality Act 2010.
  6. Respect the human-animal bond.
  7. Develop relationships with suitable agencies e.g. mental health support, animal welfare, and suggest referrals when needed.
  8. Keep animal welfare at the forefront of everything I do.

What does a District Veterinary Nurse do?

  • Help owners in their own homes to administer treatment care plans prescribed by their registered vet
  • Instill confidence in owner’s abilities to administer medications and provide vital reassurance to owners
  • Work with vets to create care plans that takes into consideration not only the needs of the patient but the needs of the owner too
  • Improve client/practice relationships
  • Facilitate client concordance. Concordance is the shared understanding between the vet and pet owner about the overall aims of the pet’s treatment care plan – nurses can help pet owners understand why medications need to be taken and how to manage pet’s conditions.
  • Reduce in-patient hospital stays
  • Outreach to clients who may not otherwise manage to attend the Practice due to their personal circumstances for their pet’s nurse clinics
  • Improve patient outcomes

Why Join The DVN Hub

  • We act as a point of connection, putting owners who need veterinary care at home in touch with skilled RVNs who can provide it. In every case, the pet is referred by the client’s own vet and the practice retains ultimate responsibility for the animal’s primary care. We currently work in partnership with practices across the UK, and we would love to talk to you about our platform and the many benefits it has for RVNs:
  • Supporting flexible working and giving you more choice
  • Offering an alternative career path to full employment with a practice, or working as a locum with limited security
  • Providing friendship and a crucial point of connection for lone workers
  • Giving you complete control – you choose the fee for your home visits
  • Speeding up payment – direct payment is made by the owner to you at the time of the visit
  • Connecting you with other district veterinary nurses via our DVN Peer Support Group
  • Highlighting CPD opportunities and sharing professional news
  • Advocating for the wellbeing of district veterinary nurses within the veterinary nursing profession.

The subscription fee for district veterinary nurses to register on the DVN hub is £95

If pet owners have any concerns following a visit or communications with a district veterinary nurse sourced from this platform, we recommend that they must deal directly with the district veterinary nurse concerned.  If this is not resolved to their satisfaction, a link to the RCVS complaints department is highlighted on this website. The DVN Hub is not responsible for the individual conduct of any district veterinary nurse sourced from this platform, but pet owners are actively encouraged to give their feedback.

If you have any questions please e-mail us and we will be in touch soon.

The DVN hub does not employ any of the nurses nor does it profit from any work generated on this platform. Our goal is to facilitate district veterinary nursing as a priority. The DVN hub advises all nurses on this site to be registered with the RCVS , have appropriate professional indemnity insurance to cover their work, be Disclosure and Barring service checked and act under the clear direction of a vet at all times. The DVN hub is not responsible for enforcing these recommendations. It is the responsibility of the individual registered veterinary nurse to ensure this and the responsibility of the pet owner to request evidence of this.
