Buddy, Clare and Zak

Buddy was referred to me after a nasty incident with the neighbour’s dog. He managed to find his way home, but the damage was extensive.

He was very weak and refusing to eat or take his medications, which caused more stress for his owners, Clare & Zak, who were desperately looking for help.

“Earlier this year our pet cat Buddy was attacked by a neighbours dog and severely mauled. Thankfully he managed to find his way home and we were able to get him to the emergency vet. Once he’d been examined it became apparent his injuries were extensive. Several organs had been punctured, ribs were broken and there was a likelihood of infection.

They operated on him and did what they could to keep him stable, but as his condition deteriorated we made a decision to move him to the Royal Veterinary College Hospital in London for further specialist surgery. Despite the odds, this went well, Buddy improved and miraculously he was discharged 6 days later.

Once we got him home we realised he was still very far from being ‘out of the woods’. He was very weak, refused to take his medication, appeared to be in pain and most alarmingly wasn’t eating. The feeding tube he had inserted in his neck had become dislodged on the long car journey home and seemed to be causing him real discomfort.

The last thing we wanted to do at that point was get him in a cage and take him back to the vet, but there was no other option. That was when we were referred to Carla. After a consultation in our home Carla took charge of the situation and put together a recovery plan.

For the next two weeks she visited twice a day to care for Buddy. She syringe fed him, gave him his various medications and painkillers, and tended his wounds, all the while reporting his progress back to our vet. After initially fearing the worst, Buddy very slowly started to improve. Day by day he got stronger as Carla literally nursed him back to life. Quite remarkably Buddy has now completely recovered and is in rude health. For that we thank a whole team of vets and veterinary surgeons (across the country!), and critically one amazing district nurse.
