Roxy and Sue

Roxy was referred to me with a nasty wound and infection. Her owner, Sue, had been informed that she had to have an operation and was looking at several weeks of intensive and expensive veterinary treatment, and would have to bring Roxy to the vets every day in order to have dressings changed.

Before the referral, Sue had been informed that euthanasia may be the best course of action.

“I thought I was going to have to have my little cat, Roxy, put to sleep as she had been missing for 3 days and came in with a huge nasty wound and terrible infection. She had an operation that day and when I went to collect her, I was told she would need her wound dressing changed every day at the vets and that she has a very long and expensive journey ahead.

I thought I made the right decision in thinking I should have her put to sleep for her benefit and also because I couldn’t afford the expensive vet fees every day for the next few weeks or months. She isn’t insured. When it came to the day before I was due to take her, I just couldn’t do it and decided that I wanted to ask the vet if I could do the daily wound dressing myself and just take Roxy in for check ups once a week.

I felt like I had to give her every possible chance and the good thing was that she was healing, was happy and eating well. Southdown Vets (Hove), referred me to Carla Finzel from the District Vet Nurse service. Carla called me that evening and reassured me that she would help me as much as humanly possible to get Roxy well again.

Carla has came to the house, every day, sometimes twice a day, for near on 3 months. After the first visit, it was evident I couldn’t see to Roxy’s wound on my own. She took many pictures for daily comparisons to check her progress. Carla is so patient, friendly, caring and reassuring.

I am so grateful to her and to Southdown for doing everything to try and help me find a way to help Roxy that I could afford much more easily. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Carla. I feel blessed to have her come into our lives. Roxy would have been put to sleep if it wasn’t for this service. There were no guarantees that she would make a recovery but she has done and is as good a new!”

Carla took on a job that seemed impossible at the time I just want to send out a HUGE “Thank you” to Carla and the Veterinary District Nurse service and Southdown Vets for being so supportive and wanting to find an affordable solution for me. All through this, Carla was also there for me, reassuring me and providing support!

Sue, Roxy’s Owner

Carla has in the past few years proved herself invaluable in supporting our patients, their owners and us a clinicians. Roxy was another cat for whom euthanasia was considered, had it not been for Carla. Roxy had a very large wound on her neck. The position and character of the wound meant that it could not be stitched, but had to be managed as an open wound. This involved very frequent bandage changes, again Roxy’s owner was not able to bring Roxy to us for these very frequent visits, but Carla managed the wound very skilfully with home care. There is a need for district nursing. This is treatment that cannot be provided within the veterinary clinic, but which some owners are not capable of providing themselves.
